Course Explanation
What Is Wushu?
Wushu is a broad term for Chinese martial arts. It includes traditional martial practices as well as modern systems of performance, physical training, and combat competition. The word combines the concepts of martial skill, training, discipline, and technical development.
Modern competitive Wushu commonly includes Taolu and Sanda. Taolu consists of choreographed sequences involving stances, kicks, jumps, hand techniques, balance, flexibility, speed, and control. Sanda is a combat sport that uses punches, kicks, movement, defensive techniques, and certain forms of throwing.
Wushu training develops more than fighting techniques. It requires concentration, coordination, patience, repetition, physical control, flexibility, and disciplined practice. Students normally begin with basic stances, movement, balance, and technique before progressing toward more complex combinations and forms.
Training Safety
Martial-arts training should progress gradually. Students should inform their instructor about injuries, medical conditions, or physical limitations and seek appropriate medical advice when necessary.
